The Cave Singers - Seeds Of Night - Invitation Songs (2007)
Reacquainting myself with The Cave Singers this afternoon. It has been too long and their tunes fit my disposition perfectly today…
The recipe for this hugely underrated band: music that is strained yet cozy, sparse yet harmonious, pleasing yet torturous….. There’s this fine balance, between opposites, that makes for brilliant songs and remarkable albums.

Seeds Of Night is a song that exhibits that fine balance. It’s starts seemingly simple but develops layers of instrumentation, Pete Quirk’s striking solo leads to complicated vocal harmonies and, in your minds eye, you gradually envision the vivid imagery brought on by the buildup and intricacy of the songwriting.
“Oh my darling we’re meadowing now,
oh love is bold in the cricketing fields
And a sly part of night gets down to get up,
oh bright light sing me a song, on and on…
Oh my love this is our town,
where gray clouds wander over heaven and ground
Oh, my love it’s difficult times,
mistakes I’ve made escape like birds from a line, on and on…”
One of my favorite songs of….I can listen to it (and envision it) repeatedly, without break.
