Waxahatchee - Misery Over Dispute - Cerulean Salt (2013)

One of the best albums I’ve purchased over the last year or so.

Flat out fantastic from start to finish. Immediate, visceral reaction upon first hearing it — in a good way.

Katie Crutchfield is flippin’ brilliant.

Ladyhawke - Cellophane - Anxiety (2012)

It’s official I’m addicted to Ladyhawke’s soon to drop album Anxiety (May 29th). And, this tune quite simply gives me chills. It’s a punch in the gut, an emotional ride and a guitar-riff-laden eargasm.

I.Am.Absolutely.Hooked.

This is the first full album from Phillipa Margaret “Pip” Brown (aka Ladyhawke) in four years. It’s well worth the wait. I’ve been jamming to the record for a few weeks now and it stands the test of rotation and time (I’ve been through the album 26+ times already - so, yeah, I’m addicted…)

There’s no let down in Anxiety. Brilliant in every way, it’s an undulating journey, from song to song, that combines to form a hypnotic and highly addictive record. From heavy guitar beats to ’80s pop mastery to rich ballads to guitar riffing madness, the more I listen to it the more I can’t get enough of it — the true test of a great album.

Fans of indie-rock and ’80s, pop/dance music will instantly fall in love with this offering. It’s a must get and I can’t recommend it more highly.

You can pre-order the album here.

TOP 30 Albums of 2011

Better late than never…

This past year has been particularly difficult, for me, to be rating and ranking albums. It’s almost not fair… I’ve mixed and matched and switched up and flip-flopped and changed my mind countless times over the last week or three.

There are so many fantastic albums and artists that come to mind and that deserve recognition (I could easily put out a top 50.) But, In my mind, these were the albums and artists that clearly stood out — a notch or two above all others.

In any case, at this moment in time, [Jan. 4, 2012 @ approx 4:00PM PST], this is what my Top 20 30 (because it was such a difficult year) looks like:

2011 was an amazing year for music and indie music in particular. AND, I also think that, in many ways, this year was a year in which women (soloists or leads in a band) really made their mark. And, a fantastic mark at that.

As always, whilst compiling a “top ##” list, one is apt to overlook, or not have heard of, or been exposed to a particular band. I welcome any and all suggestions that you may have and ANY exposure to albums/artists that I may have missed.

Happy New Year everybody!

Mix via 8tracks. Nineteen tracks including music by Cat PowerI Break Horses, and Lightning Dust. Inspired by Adrienne Rich (currently reading - highly reco) and her quote, “Life on the planet is born of woman.”

Also includes Imogen HeapRilo KileyYeah Yeah YeahsFever RayDirty Martini (disbanded I believe - love ‘em), Mates of StateMoonbabiesThe WeepiesThe Raveonettes, old school Norah Jones and a tune by Carla Bruni.

Brother - Darling Buds Of May (official video) - (2011)

Thanks for the submission. And thanks for the compliment. I really gotta get better about checking subs out and posting more of them… I’m a little behind…

“Brother” is new to me but I’m liking what I’m hearing so far… I gotta give them more of a listen, but very happy for the intro Tia.

Tumblrino’s, check out “Brother” - I know a ton of you will like ‘em - and cause Tia says so :) Thanks again.

My first ever 8tracks mix. An eclectic mix of tunes that I’ve been jamming to this week.

Oh, and the beard is alive and still unruly (not that anyone cares). This is an old picture :)

Good times.
