I find joy in music. I relish in sharing that joy. So, mostly music. Plus, whatever I'm into at the time.

bathtubWaxahatchee - bathtub - American Weekend (2012)
Beautiful songwriting.
“Take my word for it, I’m not worth it.
I ignored you all night and you don’t deserve it.
Morning, bathtub, my skin soft and hot.
I was sure you were right, but you’re not, you’re not.
I contemplate my ruined fate.
Someone will hurt me so bad one day.
And you’ll resonate or I’ll apologize
or maybe I’ll make the same mistake twice.
I hide from phonecalls under the warm water.
Malice desists, no it woefully recurs.
And it plays like daytime tv shows. I confuse you.
And I tell you not to love me but I still kiss you when I want to.
And I lament, you’re innocent,
but somehow the object of my discontent.
It’s fucked up. I let you in
even though I’ve seen what can happen.
You make a tape.
I receive it in the mail
and I force myself busy.
The diversion will prevail.
And I will swallow all my guilt with little pills and forge my chin up.
And I will only think about it in the morning, in the bathtub.”
Three word review: Poignant. Emotive. Brilliant.
Just wonderful.
BatsJoy Formidable - Bats - Wolf’s Law (2013)
Is your day going sideways?
Shut everything out and take a moment to bathe yourself in this goodness. You’ll feel markedly better whence enveloped in the cacophony of sound.

Cathartic. It worked for me. If only briefly…

We had beautiful views of the
Weather coming for us
We’ll dive in with the sin eaters
While they suck it all up

Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should’ve Come Over
“…It’s never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It’s never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It’s never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It’s never over, she’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever…”
YouthDaughter - Youth - If You Leave (2013)
The visceral reaction I have when listening to this album is indescribable.
Elena Tonra *swoon*

“…We are the reckless
We are the wild youth
Chasing visions of our futures
One day we’ll reveal the truth
That one will die before he gets there
And if you’re still bleeding, you’re the lucky ones
‘Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone
We’re setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting pictures from the flood that wrecked our home
It was a flood that wrecked this…”

be goodWaxahatchee - be good - American Weekend
Perfect.
“It’s unclear now, what we intend
We’re alone in our own world
You don’t wanna be my boyfriend
And I don’t wanna be your girl
And that, that’s a relief
We’ll drink up our grief
And pine for summer
And we’ll buy beer to shotgun
And we’ll lay in the lawn
And we’ll be good
Now I’m laughing at my boredom
At my string of failed attempts
Because you think that it’s important
And I welcome the sentiment
And we talk on the phone at night
Until it’s daylight
And I feel clever
And I hear the slow in your speech
Yeah you’re half asleep
Say goodnight
Now I’ve got friendships to mend
I’m selfishly dispossessed
You don’t wanna be my boyfriend
And that’s probably for the best
Because that, that gets messy
And you will hurt me
Or I’ll disappear
So we will drink beer all day
And our guards will give way
And we’ll be good”
Just perfect.
No Good Al JoadHop Along - No Good Al Joad - Get Disowned (2012)
This song destroys me. Lyrically and vocally poignant. Perfectly complementary instrumentation to boot.
Bonus points for the semi-obscure Grapes of Wrath narrative.
“…But your engine is still running, although the gears are covered with grime | Everybody is a little hard to love sometimes | You are my favorite because you’re a long shot | You are my enemy because you forgot! |
Generous people, they fill me with doubt | but that’s something i’d rather not talk about | And no heavy change can make me stay | I’m a no good Al Joad anyway | I’ll never lie in the back of no truck…”

Hop Along is Frances Quinlan (pictured), Dominic Angelella, and Mark Quinlan. Brilliant. Solid album from top to bottom. Definitely in my top 10 albums of the last year or so.
